Advanced Updates and Certification Strategies

Hone your skills and knowledge as you prepare to certify or recertify as an IBCLC. Join two IBCLC instructors who have been in the profession since its inception. Both have certified and recertified 8 times, including the new recertification process. One was the President of IBLCE and both have worked on the IBLCE Exam board.

This will be a quick review of the key education requirements from the IBLCE Detailed Content Outline to help prepare you to ace your IBCLC Exam whether for Certification or Recertification. Intertwined with these established facts will be new and exciting research findings or just things we find intriguing. There are mock IBLCE exams with both picture and multiple-choice sections and a study guide provided.

Learning Objectives

Analyse the role of public health campaigns, organisational policies, and global initiatives (e.g., Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, the WHO Code) in bodyfeeding promotion and protection.

Evaluate how cultural beliefs, societal norms, and social marketing impact breastfeeding practices and support.

Describe the hormonal and anatomical changes involved in mammary development, lactogenesis, and the physiology of milk production.

Identify best practices for early chestfeeding initiation, latch and positioning, feeding frequency, and recognising effective milk transfer.

Assess common breastfeeding-related conditions (e.g., mastitis, hyperbilirubinaemia, failure to thrive) and develop appropriate management strategies.

Explain the relationship between parental diet, cultural dietary practices, galactagogues, and infant allergies/intolerances.

Evaluate the impact of medications, drug metabolism, and environmental pollutants on bodyfeeding and infant health.

Compare human milk with substitutes, describe its immunological and nutritional benefits, and discuss supplementation considerations (e.g., Vitamin D).

Identify and manage lactation complications such as delayed secretory activation, engorgement, plugged ducts, and low milk supply.

Develop best practice approaches for supporting preterm and late preterm infants, parents with endocrine disorders, and those facing lactation challenges.
