Certified Lactation Educator

What is a CLE
Education and Training
Their Role
A CLE is a healthcare professional who specializes in providing essential education and support to expectant and new parents in lactation. While they do not offer clinical assessments or interventions which only the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are qualified, CLEs play a vital role in equipping families with the information and skills necessary for breastfeeding success.
CLEs undergo specialized training programs covering fundamental aspects of breastfeeding / chestfeeding / bodyfeeding, including anatomy, milk production, proper latch and positioning, as well as addressing common challenges. The course work follows IBLCE standards and is earned through an examination. At Evergreen Perinatal Education this course is provided in our course Foundations for Best Practice in Lactation Care which is updated twice annually.
Certified Lactation Educators focus on educating parents about the benefits of bodyfeeding, teaching chestfeeding techniques, and addressing common breastfeeding concerns. They lead classes and support groups, helping families make informed choices about infant feeding. CLEs often work in hospitals, clinics, private practices, and community organizations. Their goal is to promote breastfeeding and assist families in achieving their goals.

Why We Provide the CLE Designation?

1) It follows IBLCE guidelines and education meaning it is at the forefront of lactation research opposed to nationally based programs which are beholden to national policy which have conflicting interests.
2) There is no annual fee making the designation more accessible.
3) The certification lasting only five years which requires people to stay up-to-date on all aspects of lactation opposed to only taking courses based on interests. This follows the IBLCE system as well.
